RYA Powerboat Training Courses

Using our brand new Humber Destroyer 6.0m RIB we can deliver a course that suits your requirements.

We offer the following RYA courses.

Level 1 – Introduction to Powerboating

The aim of this course is to provide a practical introduction to boat handling and to introduce all the relevant aspects of safety.
This course will be fun and informative whilst introducing the thrill of handling at a boat at high speed.

Assumed Knowledge: None, just come and have fun!!!

Duration: 1 Day

Level 2 – National Powerboat Course

One of the most popular powerboat courses we run, this course aims to teach the boat handling and seamanship techniques necessary to allow you to make short trips safely.

This course involves slow and high speed boat handling. Important techniques such as Man Overboard, Anchoring and towing are also covered. There will also be an opportunity to plan a longer trip - this may be weather dependant.
It can also lead to the International Certificate of Competence (ICC) and also may be commercially endorsed for those that may require it

Duration – 2 Days

Intermediate Powerboat Day Cruising Course

At the end of this course you should have all the necessary knowledge to plan and execute a short coastal passage. Throughout the course aspects of high speed navigation, boat preparation and pilotage will be covered.
This is a great course to give you that confidence to venture further.

Assumed Knowledge – You should be competent to Powerboat L2 standard with the coastal endorsement.
It is also strongly recommended that you have a First Aid certificate and a VHF operator’s certificate

Duration – 2 Days

Advanced Powerboat Course

If you would like to learn to navigate a boat at high speed in the dark, then this is the course for you. This is the highest level of powerboat training. You will be introduced to the navigational techniques necessary and then be given an opportunity to plan and execute a night passage.
Pilotage, meteorology, rules of the road and heavy weather handling are also covered.

Successful completion of this course reduces the pre-exam experience for the RYA/MCA Advanced Powerboat Certificate of Competence.

Assumed Knowledge – You should be competent to Intermediate Powerboat Level and have a thorough knowledge of navigation and chartwork to the level of the Day Skipper Shorebased certificate

You are required to hold a First Aid Certificate and a VHF operator’s certificate.

Duration – 2 Days

RYA/MCA Advanced Powerboat Certificate of Competence

2 Day Training and Assessment.

There is now a certificate of competence available that is recognised by the MCA, which is crucial if you are planning to work on a RIB or small powerboat commercially.

This certificate is obtained after successfully completing an examination that would last 4-5 hours for one candidate and up to 7 for 2 or 3 candidates.

The pre-exam experience is listed below.

Intuition H2O can provide training prior to the exam and the use of the boat to complete the assessment. We can also provide the necessary shorebased training to commercially endorse your certificate.

Pre –Exam Experience
2 years relevant experience including night pilotage.
As a guide: 30 days, 2 days as skipper, 800 miles and 12 night hours

If you hold the Advanced Powerboat Course Completion certificate: 20 days, 2 days as skipper, 400 miles and 12 night hours.

First Aid certificate and VHF operator’s certificate are required before examination.

Intuition Petrol heads

Intuition Petrolheads is an exciting new Powerboating club aimed at young people who would like to learn new skills and go fast. Over 6 weeks you will be given the opportunity to develop your personal skills whilst having fun.

There will be an introduction to boat handling both at slow and high speeds.

There will be time trials and courses that will test your ability and you will also use all your new skills to plan and execute a longer passage.

Assumed Knowledge – None, just be prepared to go fast and have fun!

Powerboat + 1st Aid Package – 2 days – Powerboat Level 2 / Intermediate Course + 1st Aid certificate (this course would be covered over 2 evenings).
